BETTY HEAR OUR PRAYER

Betty Hear Our Prayer (2020)
Live performance at “Eat Your Heart Out” curated by GXRL ON GRILL @ Pete’s Candy Store (Brooklyn, NY)

“Betty, Hear Our Prayer” is a satirical performance meditating on Betty Crocker’s stature as a goddess amongst American housewives and the history of cookbooks (1920-1970) that doubled as discreet sex manuals.

Acting as a priestess, I perform a ritual that takes the form of a short Catholic Mass. Weaving original writing, passages from cookbooks such as “The How to Keep Him (After You’ve Caught Him) Cookbook” (1968), letters from real women to Betty herself, and critical text, I give thanks to our Goddess, Betty Crocker, for her guidance in the domestic sphere.
